Our Ethics
Fairtrade
Fair trade means that there is an equitable and fair partnership
between marketers in developed countries and producers in developing
countries. A fair trade partnership works to provide otherwise
marginalized artisans and farmers with a living wage for their
work.
Fair trade promotes sustainability through a variety of social business practices that advocate higher standards in regards to pay, work atmosphere and environmental protection, among others.
We work with several different fairtrade certified suppliers, including:
- Global Mamas; Funky, bright blockprinted fashion
- One World is Enough; Beautiful summer clothes
- Micah Clothing; Denim for dress-up and everyday
- Etiko; Ethical footwear
- Maggies Organics; Organic cotton basics
- Minga Imports; Warm alpaca accessories, alpaca silver jewellery
- Mata Traders; Funky bohemian fashion
VINTAGE:
Buying vintage represents a respect for the past of the value of things. It is a love of history, a nostalgia for by-gone eras. It rebels against our ‘disposable everything’ culture by respecting and re-loving things.
We stock a range of hand-picked items – all top quality and genuine vintage, to bring a spark of life and history to your wardrobe. We list only a few for sale on this site, but have many more in-store.
HANDMADE:
We stock a range of unique, creative NZ crafted jewellery and
accessories. This not only values the creative arts in this fine
country, but provides a concrete livelihood for those talented in such a
way! We work primarily with new and emerging artisans to give them a
kickstart in the sometimes-tricky retail environment. Included in our handmade collection is the label Romance Rewound, made by the owners and operators of The Cuckoo's Nest itself. This unique and interesting steampunk jewellery is stocked in its own seperate website here.
